5 Ways You Can Celebrate Earth Day Everyday

Earth Day may have come and gone, but there's no reason we can't celebrate our beautiful planet every day! Here are 5 things you can you can do to keep Mother Earth thriving all year round.
1. Say no to single use plastic
We currently produce roughly 300 million tonnes of plastic each year and half of that is used to make disposable things like plastic bags, straws, coffee stirrers, soft drink and water bottles and food packaging. It can be quite challenging to live without these things that we’ve become accustomed to, but it is getting easier!
You could try just cutting out one type of single-use plastic this week, like straws. Instead you could grab something like this. which packs up into a tiny little box and comes with a squeegee for easy cleaning!
If you’re super passionate, you can also encourage your local cafe to stop giving out plastic straws and non-recyclable coffee cups (which are usually coated with plastic).
2. Compost your food waste
If you think this option is only for those with large backyards, think again! Whilst regular composting is perfect if you’ve got the space (or pick up a worm kit from your local Bunnings) an even better option is the Bokashi Bucket. You can include things like bread, legumes, bones and dairy products that normally don’t decompose properly in your regular aerated static compost pile. Find one at your local hardware store.
3. Go for natural fibres
When buying clothes, try to avoid polyester, acrylic or nylon which are plastic. Try to choose fabrics like linen, cotton (organic where possible), silk and wool which are all made from natural resources and biodegrade at the end of their cycle. Plus you will love how natural fibres feel on your skin compared to the synthetics.
An even better option is to buy clothes that are second-hand or made from recycled or reclaimed textiles, like my Cleo Panel Skirt which is made from reclaimed garments.
Clothing swaps are another really fun and sustainable way to get some new colour in your wardrobe and save some unwanted pieces from landfill.
If you really need that special something that is brand new, try to support your favourite smaller brands that are doing their bit for the planet.
4. Try incorporating more vegetarian or vegan food into your diet
This option might not sound fun if you’ve never considered it before, but plant-based meals can be very tasty and nutrient-rich. Even by simply switching out one day a week without meat can have a huge impact on your eco footprint, saving greenhouse gasses and water.
5. Take 3 for the Sea
If you make the decision to take a bag with you every time you visit a beach or even just for a walk outside, you will be doing our environment a huge favour simply by picking up a couple of pieces of rubbish on your trip. So much plastic ends up in our waterways and oceans and unfortunately a lot of our wildlife think that it is food. This in turn means we end up with plastic in our food-chain, which isn’t healthy for the environment or our own bodies! You can read more about the Take 3 for the Sea initiative here.
Have you started doing any of these things regularly? Do you have any other suggestions? Let me know in the comments!
